What’s a Growler?
Growlers are 64 ounce jugs of fresh keg beers from our in-store tap systems. Each LB carries an ever changing assortment of fresh and seasonal beers on tap. Reusable Growler jugs are $3.00 each. 64 ounces of fresh tap beers at LB’s Growler Heaven!

In days gone by, to rush the growler (sometimes to roll the growler and other forms) was to take a container to the local bar to buy beer. The growler was the container, usually a tin can. To quote a Harper’s Magazine article of July 1893: “In New York a can brought in filled with beer at a bar-room is called a growler, and the act of sending this can from the private house to the public-house and back is called working the growler.”

The term survives to this day, but the growler is usually a ½ gallon jug of beer.

At Liquor Barn, this tradition continues with several varieties of fresh draft beer at each store. The empty growlers (½ gallon glass jugs) are available for sale ranging from $3.00 for a no frills glass jug with a screw cap, to around $30.00 for a metal handled growler with a ceramic flip-top cap. 

When you look in your fridge and find your growler empty, just bring it back in to any Liquor Barn store to purchase a refill. Our constantly changing draft beers varieties cover a wide range of American Craft beer favorites and quality imported beers.

Shipping charges for Special Orders: We usually order about once per month from these suppliers. If we place your Special Order with our regular order, we do not charge any additional shipping fees as they are spread throughout the larger order. If you hit the timing of the order just right, your Special Order will be in stock in a week or so. Liquor Barn is always working with small breweries and distributors to get them to distribute their beers here in Kentucky. Fat Tire, Yuengling, and Alaskan Brewery are currently unavailable in this state, but we are trying to convince them to do so! If you don’t see a beer you want on our shelves, ask us, and if it’s possible to get it into the state, we will happily special order it for you!

For Labor Day weekend and the U of L vs. UK football game we are going to have a Louisville (BBC) vs Lexington (Alltech) beer tasting.

Kentucky Light is a German Kolsch-Style Ale that is light in body and pale in color with a crisp white head.  A subtle fruity hop aroma is balanced by a bready malt base.  A crisp hop bitterness helps to round out the finish.  Brewed in Lexington, KY.  5% abv.

Kentucky Bourbon Ale is Kentucky Ale aged in bourbon barrels.  Medium body strong ale with notes of oak, vanilla, butterscotch and bourbon.  A smooth sweet finish that would be best enjoyed as an aperitif.  Brewed in Lexington, KY.  7% abv.

BBC American Pale Ale One of Louisville’s best selling Mico-Brews.  This full-bodied APA is loaded with hops which give it a bold bitter flavor with a crisp and citrusy finish.  Drinks more like an India Pale Ale.  Brewed by the Bluegrass Brewing Company (Main Street) in Louisville, KY.

BBC Rye 75 is an IPA brewed with Rye Malt.  The hops in this beer dominate the flavor while the rye malt cuts through leaving a crisp, almost bready finish.  This beer has a great balance between the citrusy hops and a semi-sweet malt base.  Brewed by the Bluegrass Brewing Company (St. Matthews) in Louisville, KY.  7.5% abv.

- When transporting a keg, take it slow and easy when you move it  - from your shopping cart to your vehicle, and from your vehicle to your party place. Secure it well with straps to prevent it from rolling around or tipping over in your car’s trunk or truck bed. This slow and easy approach will help reduce foam upon initial tapping. And be sure to bring an adult friend to help you carry it, kegs are really heavy!

- Ideally you should wait 2 to 4 hours from the time you get your keg home and settled into an ice tub/refrigerator/kegerator BEFORE tapping the keg to allow the contents to settle and get acclimated.

- Kegs must be kept cold at all times.  If your keg is running in a kegerator system, 38 degrees is the ideal temperature. 

- You will need a tub larger than the keg to keep the keg in ice.

- Start by pouring a small layer of ice into the bottom of the tub (This is because beer is drawn from the bottom of the keg upward!) Then insert the keg in the tub, pour ice around the sides of the keg, but not on top of the keg…yet!

Next: Tapping the Keg

- Insert the tap into the keg opening, twist and push the handle down securely.

This should lock the mechanical parts of the keg and tap together. If it doesn’t feel like it is secure, don’t try and force the handle. Simply check the alignment and try again.

**IMPORTANT TIPS**

- Make sure you have the right tap handle (a/k/a keg coupler) for your keg beer!

- After you have successfully tapped your keg, you need to release all the pressure off the keg by pushing the small, steel, pressure-release button on the side of the lower tap shaft.  If your tap does not have a pressure release button, open the tap faucet until all pressure is relieved before pumping the keg.  These first few glasses of beer may contain more foam, but be patient!

- After initially releasing the pressure on the keg, when you fill a glass of beer from the keg, pump slowly. The beer should come out slow and easy. The less pressure on the keg, the less foam will be created in the keg cups, which means more beer for everyone.  Most importantly…it means that there won’t be people walking around with cups that are ½ foam, ½ beer. 

Do not over pump the keg!  This adds more pressure to the beer and will create foam. Only pump when tap faucet is open and until you reach your desired flow rate. Your keg does not need to be continually pumped.  If the flow rate is not right, re-check the seal from the tap to the keg.

- After Tapping the the keg, pour ice on top of the keg and around the tap.  Only do this after you have tapped the keg! (If you put ice on top of the keg before you tap it, it can interfere with the tapping procedure.)

NOTES: Different kegs (brands, sizes) require different taps. Make sure you have the right kind of tap for your particular keg of beer before you leave the store!   

Guinness Kegs are special! Guinness kegs require a home draft system that employs the use of a blended nitrogen gas tank (75% nitrogen, 25% CO2) to make the beer pour properly.  Without this home draft system with the nitro gas, Guinness will simply come out of the tap as flat, black beer, with no head or foam on top.

Paperwork is given with each Keg purchase. Holding on to your paperwork enables you to get your deposit money returned much quicker.

Bring a friend to help carry your keg; kegs are very heavy. All kegs should be kept cold at all times.

A large tub should be used to keep the keg in ice.

Pour a small layer of ice in the bottom of the tub, then insert keg into the tub, then pour ice all around the sides of the keg.

Tap the keg THEN pour ice on top of the keg around the tap. (This keeps ice out of the keg opening which can mess with the tapping procedure.)
